CAG
Circulation Advisory Group.
CALL NUMBER
A unique identifying code for each title in the records of a library. This number matches the number on a volume, usually on the spine. Books are arranged on the shelves by this number.
CARD CATALOG
The traditional library catalogue in which entries for authors, titles, and subjects are made on cards stored in drawers. Call number information is also given to aid patrons in finding materials. At Vanderbilt, only the Music Library maintains an active card catalog in addition to the online catalog.
CARREL
Desk or table located in a library for use as an individual study table.
CASETABLE
Alphabetical list of court opinions by name of plaintiff; sometimes by name of defendant also (Law Library).
CASSETTE
Small case, as an encased video or audio tape.
CATALOG
(Noun) A list of books, maps, or other items, arranged in some definite order. It records, describes, and indexes the resources of a collection, a library, or a group of libraries.
CATALOGING
(Verb) The process of making entries for a catalog; additionally, it may cover all the processes involved in preparing books for the shelves.
CCH
Commerce Clearing House.
CDAG
Collection Development Advisory Group.
CD-ROM
Compact Disk-Read Only Memory; format for storing and retrieving information.
CENTRAL LIBRARY
A division of the library whose collections support the humanities and the social sciences; located in the General Library Building.
CHARGING
The process of recording the loan of library material to an individual, another library, etc.
CIRCULATION
The process of loaning library materials to patrons; the department that handles these loans.
CLASSIFICATION (PERSONNEL)
The university's system of categorizing positions in descriptive titles and pay grades.
CLIENT SERVER
A relationship between computers in which the client is usually a PC. Data is accessed and processed on the server and the client can then perform tasks based on information it gets from the server.
CLR
Council on Library Resources.
CODES
Laws of a state or nation arranged by subject (Law Library).
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
The process of collecting and developing library materials; the unit of a library whose responsibilities include this process.
COMPACT SHELVING
High-density storage system for library materials; used in Library Annex.
COMPUTER CENTER
See ACIS.
CONSER
Cooperative Online Serials Program; A national program in which libraries create and share records used for cataloging, acquisition, and ILL of serials. Heard Library is a member of CONSER.
CONTROL ID
Unique identifier, replacing the accession number, derived from the barcode. Items in inventory are shelved in control number order.
COPY SERVICE
A unit of the Office of the University Librarian that manages the copiers and reader printers in all library divisions except Law and Biomedical.
CPU
Central Processing Unit; "brains" of computer.
CRL
Center for Research Libraries.
CROSS REFERENCES
"Directions" which lead a user from one heading (name, subject, or title) to another heading. "See" references are used to show the preferred term. "See also" references are used to show related terms.
CUNNINGHAM
Classification system used to classify books published before 1970 (Biomedical Library).
CURRICULUM LABORATORY
A collection of instructional materials for grades K through 12; located in the Education Library.
CURSOR
Moveable symbol on a computer screen that shows where the user is working. In most text applications, it appears as a blinking dash.
