Peabody Library's gate count has increased from 2003/2004, when our records were first maintained. The statistics for the 2007/2008 year are similar to those of the previous three years, with peak usage occurring in September, October, February and April.

A review of the online statistics over the last three years suggests that our tutorials are not getting the attention and traffic that we would like for them to be receiving, so we need to make sure that they are visible and get better promotion in the future. One way we plan to make them more visible is through our "What's News" monthly podcast, a new service started in 2008. Our new course-based research guides have attracted more people to the research section of our site, and are obviously filling a need for students.
New departmental resource guide pages were created this year and we restructured the Finding Articles and other Resources link off the homepage.

Between 2003 and 2008 totals by month for all questions and for reference questions have followed assignment-driven patterns. After two peak years in 2004/2005 and 2005/2006, numbers were lower in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. At the same time counts for research consultations rose, suggesting that patrons are coming to the library for more difficult questions and finding tools for answering basic questions through another venue.
This spring, we added an instant message option to our homepage for our patrons to contact us through IM. The testbed program is called "Ask George". Patrons can ask questions or reserve a room using the resource.

Leslie served as a mock interviewer for an HOD 1410 class. She conducted a presentation about the HOD department for the staff of the Writing Studio in January. She conducted a library orientation to Peabody College athletes. Additional workshops are planned for the athletes later in the summer.
Celebration:
* The library provided desserts for the Picnic with the Profs event.
* We honored our graduating student assistants with a party in April during the week of National Student Workers Week. A book was added to the collection for each senior in his or her area of study with a nameplate in his or her honor.

90 research consultations
41 library instruction sessions for 1,182 people
The Peabody Library Instruction Team conducted 41 course-related sessions and 14 subject-specific workshops, which brought an attendance total of 1,182 participants for the school year. The Instruction Team also conducted a five-year effectiveness study to see if the Team’s efforts were meeting the needs of the Library’s constituents. From reviewing the 2003-2008 statistics, the numbers showed that the Team had conducted 182 course-related sessions and 112 subject-specific workshops to 5,617 participants. This is a distinguished effort since the Team has only consisted of two full-time librarians and a library associate since its conception in 2003. The review of the statistics and grand total prove that the Library is serving as both a teaching library and resource center to not only Peabody College but the Vanderbilt community as well.

118 assessment sessions offered for 466 students
Library staff proctored 60 iSkills assessments for 253 first year students (100%) and 58 assessments to a total of 213 seniors (69%). Evening and Saturday classes were offered to allow student teachers and practicum students the opportunity to take the test.
Peabody Library staff were actively involved in preparations for the Vanderbilt Visions instruction program in 2007. Leslie Fouch and Lee Ann Lannom provided instruction sessions and Eli Moody worked with Melinda Brown to create four videos unsed in conjuntion with the 20 instructional sessions.
In 2008, Lee Ann teamed with Amy Stewart-Mailhiot (Cental) to create an instruction session for first-year students that utilizes Wikipedia searching to address the difference between scholarly and popular resources. Stacy Owens worked with Ramona Romero (Central) and Melinda Brown (Central) to create a session using documents from our Special Collections on the class of 1912.

I first met Lee Ann last semester when I had a few acquisition questions. She answered those questions so thoroughly and expertly that I asked if she might take the time out of her schedule to meet with the students in my class. In May, we began offering book and article delivery to EdD distance education students. Need for this service was first identified in a 2006 library survey of students. Steve Dunning and Karen Swoopes worked with library interlibrary loan staff to arrange a procedure that satisfied their concerns and met the needs of our students.

Electronic reserve usage has steadily increased since the service was first offered. The number of pages we’re scanning is decreasing as professors increasingly use articles from our databases and reused articles from previous semesters. This allows us to process requests more quickly overall. In the coming years, it looks like we will be scanning between 10,000 and 13,000 pages each year, down from 20,000 that were scanned during the first year the service was offered. We believe that we will see more articles linked from our databases in the coming years as well as increasingly more articles reused from previous semesters.

We updated our microfilm collection, withdrawing microfilm duplicated in databases or other Vanderbilt library collections. We also weeded the Curriculum Materials Collection. Lara Beth Lehman completed the reclassification of older reading materials in the Curriculum Materials Center from Dewey to Library of Congress classification. She also reclassed the Science, Math, Early Childhood, Language Arts, Music and Arts sections. Lara Beth and Joell Smith-Borne edited and posted new pages for the CMC/Youth Collections on our Web pages.
Lee Ann Lannom worked with Library ITS staff to create an online survey for faculty to allow us to evaluate some low-use online journals. Because of the response, we were able to cancel 10 journals for a collections saving of $4,844.15.

In the spring semester, we sponsored a practicum student from the University of Tennessee School of Information Science, Robbi de Peri. Robbi provided service desk support, proctored iSkills assessment tests, supported EndNote instruction, and created a bibliography for a library system-wide team working on services for first year students. The Library held an open house for UT Information Science distance students residing in the middle Tennessee area in January. We hope to use the event to recruit future librarians and draw UT practicum students.

* We participated in the Association of Research Libraries' Study of Emerging New Models of Publication by surveying faculty to determine what Web 2.0 online resources he or she uses to obtain and/or share research information.
* In October, Lee Ann Lannom (PB '85) attended the Peabody Pioneers alumni luncheon.
* Celia sat on a panel for Art 152 students to review art installations proposed for Central and Divinity Libraries.
* Stacy Owens updated and distributed the Peabody Walking Tour.
* We created a page for sharing top ideas that we learned at conferences and staff development programs.

* Joell Smith-Borne offered a brown bag on migrating to Outlook for Heard Library Staff.
* Eli Moody conducted a Camtasia Studio workshop for Heard Library staff.
* Joell and Karen Swoopes offered the Heard staff a brown bag on using Outlook for time management that drew a near-capacity crowd.
* Lara Beth Lehman did a presentation on using children's literature to teach character education at an in-service meeting of Wilson County school librarians in Mt. Juliet.
* Amy Dumouchel gave a presentation to Regan Phillips' elementary French class on attending school in Quebec.
* Leslie Foutch conducted a library instruction session for a University School of Nashville psychology class. She also served on a search committee for an Outreach Coordinator for the Science & Engineering Library. Leslie served as a library liaison to the Owen Management School's Accelerator program.

Ms. Cherrie Farnette donated 402 books to the Curriculum Materials Center in honor of her mother Imogene Forte. Mrs. Forte was a Peabody alumna and professor.
Joell Smith-Borne arranged for the library to donate weeded items from the Curriculum Materials Center and discarded journals to Abintra Montessori School in Nashville. The school agreed to send any materials that they did not use to New Orleans or to their sister school in Costa Rica. We donated weeded textbooks to the state's Corrections Facility.

In August, the Information Literacy Coordinator at the University of Manitoba in Winniepeg saw our online tutorial on Scholarly vs Popular Periodicals on YouTube and requested permission to post the resource on their homepage. Paul Gherman sent the tutorial to all of the Association of Research Libraries directors and received the following responses:

"Paul, this is a very helpful tutorial and I am sharing it with all my library faculty."
"This is exactly the type of product that we should be developing and sharing."
To date, we have given permission to librarians at the following libraries to post the tutorial: University of Manitoba, Brown University, University of California at Berkeley, Florida International University, Brigham Young University, and Louisiana State University. The American Library Association has posted it to their information literacy wiki.
Leslie Foutch and Eli Moody received Innovation & Creativity Awards at the Heard Library's Staff Service Awards celebration in October. Leslie won for her work as an embedded librarian in HOD 1000 during fall 2006. Eli won for his work with online tutorials and his editing of four short films for Vanderbilt Visions.
Presentations/Publications:
* In July, Eli Moody presented a lecture on the topic of creating online tutorials and working with live action video at the SEFLIN Energize 2.0 conference at Florida International University.
* Lara Beth Lehman wrote two book reviews for the Tennessee Library Association's Tennessee Libraries online journal. In April, she was elected co-chair of the Tennessee Library Association Reference Roundtable.
* Lee Ann Lannon, along with two librarians from the Central Library, spoke to a group at the LOEX Conference in Oak Brook, Illinois. Her topic was Vanderbilt Visions: An Exercise in Collaboration.
* Celia Walker serves on the content committee for the IMLS-funded statewide digitization project, Volunteer Voices. She gave a presentation on the project to attendees at the Tennessee Association of Museums Annual Conference in Jackson, Tennessee.

In January, Lara Beth Lehman worked with Ann Neely to offer our second annual children's literature event, Mystique of the Seal: Unlocking the Mysteries behind the Geisel and Newbery Awards, which drew 80 attendees. The event featured Robin Smith, member of the Geisel Award Panel, and Newbery Committee member Dean Schneider, who told the crowd about how books are selected for these prestigious national American Library Association awards. The event was podcast on the university's news homepage.
Karen Swoopes organized 2 book displays in the Grand Reading Room: she worked with Kathy Smith of Special Collections to create an exhibit about Booker T. Washington and Bruce Ryburn Payne. She also worked with Andy Van Schaack, who graciously loaned illustrations from his personal collection of The Mad Scientists Club to use in an exhibit.

In October, the Peabody Library Youth Collection Reading Room was named in honor of Henry S. and Imogene Forte.
In November, a bench in front of the library was dedicated to the memory of Allison Rose.
New furniture was installed in the library's Grand Reading Room. Two rows of tables holding single-user computers were removed and replaced with four tables designed to encourage small group study. Four additional computers were added to bring out total in that room from 12 to 16. Club chairs and occasional tables were placed in the room. The old tables were reused, placing a large table in the Learning Commons to facilitate overflow in classes; in Peabody 305 to replace two old desks; and in the foyer to give users additional group workspace.
In January, we began planning for a renovation of the ground floor area, vacated by Environmental Health & Safety. The area is being converted into a study hall, research consultation room, meeting room and office area and is scheduled to be completed by fall 2008/2009 semester.
We offered extended hours (24 hour facilities) for our patrons during the two week period of exams in the fall and spring semesters.
