Security Issues and
the Library Web
Marshall Breeding, Vanderbilt University
There are a number of issues and
concerns related to the security of a library Web server. Libraries need to be
able to provide content to their users, yet restrict access from others; they
need to authenticate users to verify that they are part of the library’s user
base. It is also important that libraries secure a Web server against hackers
and ensure that all data on the server is backed up in case of a hardware or
software failure. This half day workshop presents information on these security
issues and offers practical advice and assistance on maintaining a library Web
site with adequate security.
